This Project embodies the aesthetic and structural elements of Edinburgh’s manhole covers, transforming these ordinary objects into recognizable symbols for both locals and visitors. Through this symbolic code, the project redefines manhole covers as landmarks, each with its own "message" for the city, encouraging public recognition and appreciation of the invisible yet essential elements of urban infrastructure.
The unique "code" of Fountain Park’s sewer system in Edinburgh was created through meticulous observation and documentation of manhole covers along the route. Each cover was carefully counted and recorded to develop a distinct text sequence that symbolizes the hidden, often overlooked infrastructure beneath the city. This project translates the individual characteristics of each manhole cover into a symbolic sequence, forming a coded "identity" for the area that reflects the unseen systems supporting urban life.
